Exposure Therapy

Systematically confronting fears in a controlled, therapeutic context.

Exposure therapy is a cognitive-behavioral treatment primarily used for anxiety disorders. It involves systematically confronting feared objects, situations, or memories in a controlled, therapeutic context. Through repeated exposure, individuals learn that their fears are often unfounded or exaggerated.

This approach helps reduce anxiety and avoidance behaviors and enhances coping skills. It is highly effective for phobias, PTSD, OCD, and other anxiety-related conditions.

What to expect

After an assessment of your specific fears and their impact on daily life, you and your therapist create an exposure hierarchy: a list of feared situations ranked from least to most anxiety-provoking. Starting with lower-anxiety items, you are systematically exposed to feared stimuli, and after each exposure the experience is discussed. Clients often practice exposures between sessions to reinforce learning.
