Child Therapy

Child Therapy in Brooklyn, NY

Play therapy, TF-CBT, and parent coaching for kids ages 4–12 — for anxiety, big feelings, behavior, and trauma.

Kids don't have the language adults have — they show us how they feel through behavior, play, and the body. Our child therapists are trained in play therapy, trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT), and parent-child interaction approaches so we can meet your child where they are. Parents are part of the team from day one.

This may be a good fit if…

  • Anxiety, school refusal, or perfectionism
  • Big emotions, meltdowns, or behavior at home or school
  • Trauma, loss, or family transitions (divorce, move, new sibling)
  • Selective mutism or social anxiety
  • Sleep, eating, or toileting issues with an emotional component

Play Therapy

For ages 4–10, play is therapy. Sand tray, puppets, drawing, and structured games let kids externalize what they can't yet put into words. Our play therapists are trained in both non-directive (child-led) and directive (skill-building) play modalities.

Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT)

TF-CBT is the gold-standard treatment for childhood trauma. It's a structured 12–16 session protocol that builds coping skills first, then gradually processes the trauma, with parent involvement throughout.

Parent Coaching

Every child case includes regular parent sessions. We teach the same emotion-coaching, co-regulation, and limit-setting skills your therapist is teaching your child, so the work doesn't stay in the office.

School & Pediatrician Coordination

With your permission, we coordinate with teachers, school counselors, and your pediatrician — sharing strategies, attending IEP meetings, or writing letters of medical necessity when needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How young can my child start therapy?

We see children ages 4 and up. For toddlers and pre-schoolers under 4, parent-child dyadic work (we coach you in real time) is usually more effective than therapy with the child alone.

Will I know what my child says in session?

We share themes, patterns, and skills we're working on — without breaking the trust that makes therapy work for kids. We meet with parents regularly and tell you exactly what's safe to share and what to hold.

Do you treat ADHD in children?

We support kids with ADHD on the behavioral and emotional side — executive functioning, frustration tolerance, peer skills, parent strategies. We don't prescribe medication; we coordinate with your pediatrician or psychiatrist when needed.

Is this covered by insurance?

Yes — Crown Counseling is in-network with Aetna, Cigna / Evernorth, Empire BlueCross BlueShield, Anthem BCBS, Healthfirst, MetroPlus, Fidelis, Oxford / Oscar, Northwell Health, and Medicare. Many clients pay $0–$35 per session after benefits are verified. We confirm your specific copay before your first appointment.

Do you offer in-person and telehealth?

Both. In-person sessions take place at our Crown Heights, Brooklyn office (1398 Carroll St). Telehealth is available to anyone physically located in New York State on a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform.

How soon can I get started?

Most new clients are seen within 3–7 days. After you submit the intake form, our care coordinator calls within one business day to verify your insurance, answer questions, and book your first session at a time that works for you.
