Individual counseling is the foundation of what we do at Crown. You and one licensed clinician, working through whatever is in front of you — anxiety, depression, a transition, a stuck pattern, a hard relationship, a sense that something needs to change. Our therapists are trained in multiple evidence-based modalities and match the approach to you, not the other way around.
This may be a good fit if…
- ✓Anxiety, depression, or stress that won't lift on its own
- ✓Life transitions — career, relationship, parenthood, identity
- ✓Self-esteem, perfectionism, or chronic self-criticism
- ✓Workplace stress, burnout, or imposter feelings
- ✓Identity exploration (sexuality, gender, faith, culture)
- ✓A sense that 'I just want to talk to someone who gets it'
Matched to You
Intake matches you to a therapist whose specialties and style fit what you're bringing in. If the fit isn't right after 2–3 sessions, we re-match — no awkwardness.
Collaborative Goal-Setting
You and your therapist set specific goals in the first 2 sessions and revisit them quarterly so therapy stays on track.
Insurance-Forward
We verify your benefits before your first session so you know exactly what your copay will be.
Key benefits
Personalized to You
No protocol-only treatment. Your therapist matches modality, pacing, and style to what you actually need.
Total Confidentiality
What you say in session stays in session, with the narrow legal exceptions every therapist must follow.
Insight + Skills
We balance understanding (why this pattern, where did it start) with practical tools you can use this week.
A Trusted Sounding Board
Outside perspective from someone trained to listen well — not advice-giving from people with their own stake.
Sustainable Change
Therapy that doesn't just patch the symptom but addresses the system that keeps generating it.
A Place That's Yours
Fifty minutes a week that belongs only to you — increasingly rare and increasingly necessary.
Approaches we use
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Structured, skill-based work on the thoughts and behaviors maintaining anxiety, depression, and stress.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Deeper, longer-arc work on the recurring patterns — often rooted in early relationships — that show up across your life.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
A compassionate, parts-based approach especially useful for self-criticism, internal conflict, and trauma.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Values-driven therapy that helps you act on what matters even when difficult thoughts and feelings are present.
Trauma-Informed Care
All of our individual therapy is trauma-informed; when trauma is central, we add EMDR or somatic approaches.
Our approach at Crown Counseling
Individual counseling is the most common entry point to Crown Counseling. People come in for every reason — a recent crisis, a long-standing pattern, a transition, or simply the sense that something needs attention. Our job is to meet you where you are and tailor the work to fit.
Matching matters. During intake, our care coordinator pairs you with a clinician whose specialty areas, therapeutic style, and identity (when that matters to you) fit what you're bringing in. Research has shown that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of outcomes across all forms of therapy [1] — sometimes more important than the specific modality. If the match isn't quite right after a few sessions, we re-pair without making it a big deal.
Our clinicians are trained in cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, IFS, ACT, and trauma-focused approaches. Most clients benefit from an integrative blend — for example, CBT skills to manage anxiety in the short term, paired with psychodynamic or IFS work on the longer pattern underneath. Meta-analyses consistently show that all major evidence-based therapies produce meaningful improvements in mood, anxiety, and life satisfaction; the keys are a strong alliance, a clear focus, and consistent attendance [2].
Most clients meet weekly for 50 minutes. Some come for a defined short-term goal (8–12 sessions); others use therapy as ongoing support through a season of life. Both work. We don't push you to stay longer than you need or push you out before you're ready.
Brooklyn is a diverse community, and we work hard to make sure individual therapy at Crown is welcoming and useful across cultures, faiths, identities, and life experiences. We accept most major insurance plans and verify benefits before your first session so cost is clear from the start.
